About The Dropout
Problem |
Referred to as “The Silent Epidemic,”
the high school dropout crisis claims 1.3 million students each
year, that is one student every 26 seconds. The dropout problem
is not just a school problem, it’s a community and business
problem that impacts everyone and places a burden on the nation,
state and community economy. Columbus has the highest discrepancy
between a dropout’s income and a high school graduate’s
income in the nation. Solving America’s dropout crisis requires
immediate action to address this critical and pressing challenge.
Difficult as the dropout problem may seem, recognition of its
magnitude has created an environment ripe for action.

Taking Action |
The Academic Acceleration Academy, a dropout
recovery school serving as an alternate to the traditional school
environment; providing wrap around support and personalized educational
experiences, has formed a Dropout Prevention and Intervention
Committee to guide the development and implementation
of recommendations identified by the 250 community stakeholders
at the America’s Promise Alliance - “Columbus Dropout
Prevention Summit.” The recommendations emphasized strengthening
current efforts and initiating new strategic activity around measurable
policy and program support for young people.
